Warner Bros. is developing a live-action *Flintstones* feature with Ryan Gosling and Jessie Henderson attached as producers through their Open Invite banner, marking a new attempt to bring the Hanna-Barbera property into contemporary feature filmmaking.
The project is in early development and is currently being taken out to writers. No director, cast beyond Gosling’s producing involvement, production schedule or release date has been announced.
The original animated series debuted on ABC in 1960 and centered on Fred and Wilma Flintstone, their daughter Pebbles, and neighbors Barney and Betty Rubble in the prehistoric town of Bedrock. Its combination of domestic sitcom structure and Stone Age setting made it one of television animation’s most recognizable formats.
Gosling’s involvement places the project inside a broader Hollywood pattern of revisiting established animation brands through live-action reinterpretation. The key creative question will be whether a new film treats Bedrock as a straightforward family comedy, a heightened satire or a more modern reworking of the property’s suburban themes.
The announcement is especially notable because it comes from a producer rather than a confirmed acting role. Gosling and Henderson’s Open Invite label has been associated with developing projects across film and television, but the current *Flintstones* package remains at the writing stage. That leaves the eventual tone, story focus and cast open.
For Warner Bros., the property also carries corporate history: *The Flintstones* originated under Hanna-Barbera, a studio whose legacy now sits within the Warner Bros. entertainment portfolio. Any feature version would therefore connect a major modern studio’s franchise strategy with one of television animation’s foundational sitcoms.
At present, the confirmed development is limited but clear: Warner Bros. is pursuing a live-action feature, Gosling and Henderson are producing, and writers are being sought. Everything beyond that remains unannounced.
