UMAR JOHN | NEXTNOW360 | Washington Freedom has broken ground on the proposed Frederick Cricket Park in Frederick, Maryland, moving the Major League Cricket franchise closer to a permanent home. The ceremony took place Friday, October 16, at the Gateway property along East Patrick Street, near Interstate 70 and the Monocacy River.

The privately funded development is planned as a professional cricket venue and community destination. The city says the team is targeting an opening in 2027, subject to outstanding approvals and the construction schedule.

Owned by technology entrepreneur Sanjay Govil, Washington Freedom has operated without a permanent home venue since its establishment in 2023. The Frederick News-Post reported that the team previously split its designated home matches between Dallas and Morrisville, North Carolina.

For players, the Frederick project offers the prospect of a consistent base. Washington Freedom player Andries Gous told the newspaper that having a permanent home would be special after receiving support around the country.

Govil described a broader match-day experience, drawing on the tailgating atmosphere he encountered at Auburn University. His vision, as reported by the newspaper, includes space for supporters to gather before and after games, extending the occasion beyond the cricket itself.

The project’s published plans describe approximately 10,000 total capacity, divided between 5,000 fixed seats and space for around 5,000 spectators on grass areas.

The 10,000 figure describes total spectator capacity, with roughly half accommodated in fixed seats. The project website also identifies youth sports, outdoor recreation and community events among the intended uses.

Frederick’s City Council approved rezoning of the Gateway property in August, allowing the proposal to advance through development review.

The city says initial activity will involve grading and preparing the playing field. Full construction of the Special Events Center still requires final site-plan approval and the necessary permits.

The ceremony therefore marks a development milestone, rather than confirmation that every part of the venue has received construction authorization.

The project’s progress follows public debate over how a major sports venue would fit into Frederick’s existing roads and surrounding neighborhoods. WYPR’s earlier coverage of the rezoning process documented both support from cricket families and concerns about traffic, parking and the floodplain location.

The project website says Maryland’s Department of the Environment has issued a floodplain permit covering filling and grading for the cricket pitch. That permit addresses specific site-preparation work and does not replace the remaining city approvals.

The city continues to identify transportation, parking and event management among the applicable development conditions. The project website describes a proposed match-day parking and shuttle arrangement using the Frederick County Fairgrounds.

In a September 24 project update, Washington Freedom said it had presented the city with a $500,000 contribution toward regional transportation improvements on September 17. Govil joined Mayor Michael O’Connor and city staff for that presentation, according to the update.

The project’s published financial projections distinguish between potential public revenue and activity within the venue. Its FAQ estimates more than $1.7 million in combined annual city, county and state tax revenue, alongside more than $13 million in annual in-venue economic activity.

These are project-published forecasts, not guaranteed returns. Tax receipts and venue activity measure different things and should not be presented as interchangeable figures.

The park’s next steps are field preparation and the remaining approvals needed before full venue construction can proceed.
