Netflix’s 2026 slate is placing South Asian identity at the center of two very different projects: *Unaccustomed Earth*, a drama about an Indian American community in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and *Operation Safed Sagar*, a Hindi production set during the Kargil War.
*Unaccustomed Earth* is inspired by Jhumpa Lahiri’s short-story collection and is led by Freida Pinto, Siddharth, Sarayu Blue and Indraneil Sengupta. Netflix describes the series as an interconnected drama about love, desire, marriage and belonging inside an elite Indian American community.
The project’s setting gives it a distinct global-South-Asian angle. Rather than treating diaspora life as background texture, the series is built around the social pressures and private relationships of a specific Indian American community in Cambridge.
At the other end of the slate, *Operation Safed Sagar* dramatizes the Indian Air Force’s Golden Arrows squadron during the Kargil War. Netflix says the production contributed more than $24 million to India’s economy, including employment, local business activity and production-related investment.
The two projects show Netflix pursuing scale in opposite directions: intimate diaspora storytelling on one side and a high-budget national-history production on the other. Both are designed to travel beyond India, but they rely on different forms of recognition—cultural specificity for *Unaccustomed Earth* and military spectacle for *Operation Safed Sagar*.
Netflix has not announced a confirmed release date for *Unaccustomed Earth* in the cited listing. *Operation Safed Sagar* is already part of the platform’s August 2026 lineup, including a listed August 7 release.
