Mani Ratnam’s untitled Tamil film starring Vijay Sethupathi and Sai Pallavi is scheduled to reveal its title on September 7, 2026. The announcement follows a teaser that introduces the project through Kolkata’s streets, trams, neighbourhoods and crowds rather than conventional plot details. The film’s title and storyline remain officially undisclosed.
The teaser presents Kolkata as a defining part of the film’s world. Its images place the two leads within a city shaped by movement, public spaces and contrasting shades of light and darkness. Vijay Sethupathi shared the glimpse with the line, “Between light and shadow, life finds its colours,” signalling the atmospheric tone of the campaign. A separate announcement video carried the phrase, “Life is rarely black & white,” before confirming the title-reveal date.
Kolkata at the centre
Production has already begun, with portions filmed in Kolkata, including around the Howrah Bridge. The location work indicates that the city is likely to play a substantial role in the film’s visual identity, although the makers have not confirmed its genre, character arcs or official plot. Reports have described the project as relationship-driven, but that description has not been formally confirmed by the production team.
The project marks Mani Ratnam’s first directorial feature after Thug Life. It also reunites him with composer A. R. Rahman, extending one of Indian cinema’s most established filmmaker-composer partnerships. Lyca Productions is presenting the film, while Madras Talkies is producing it. P. C. Sreeram is part of the technical team as cinematographer. (dtnext.in)
For Sai Pallavi, the film is her first collaboration with Mani Ratnam. Vijay Sethupathi returns to the director’s fold after appearing in Chekka Chivantha Vaanam. Their new pairing, combined with Rahman’s music and Kolkata’s prominent visual presence, has made the production one of the closely watched Tamil films currently in progress. The next confirmed milestone is the title announcement scheduled for September 7, 2026.
